I once heard comedian Brian Regan talk about his new contact lenses after renewing his prescription after six years. He quirks, "you know, I could have been seeing things! How could instantly improved vision not be at the top of my to-do list? 'Nah, I can see tomorrow. I got a sock drawer that needs sorting out.'"
A year ago we asked Windsor East residents to fill out their names on a list if they felt they needed glasses which was out of their price range. We quickly surpassed 100 names. New Creation Family Church quickly set about fundraising money to buy lenses for these applicants, but then we ran into our next problem. You can't buy a one-size-fits-all set of glasses for people. They need their eyes tested. That would be an extra R500 per person.
That's when Spec-Savers, Cresta, stepped in. They told us that they would offer free eye-tests to Windsor residents throughout the month of August as well as a package deal with the money that we raised for lenses so that the residents could pick out a set of glasses on their way out. So, during our community outreach month of August, we're going to be taking 3 residents a day to Cresta shopping centre to get their eyes tested and to choose for themselves a pair of glasses!
This is so exciting. If you'd liked to get involved in lifting the residents to Cresta each day, send an e-mail to us and we'd love to involve you in this process. It'll be a great month of empowering people in such a simple, yet powerful way.
